Folio privacy policy

1. Summary

Folio does not collect personal data. All app data is stored locally on your device. The app does not include analytics, telemetry, advertising, or crash reporting. No account is required to use the app.

Accuracy and limitations

Ultra HDR shows true HDR only on Android 14 and newer with an HDR-capable screen; on other devices it falls back to standard range. DLNA casting streams the file to your TV without transcoding, so a clip in a codec your TV does not support may not play there. Place names for geotagged photos come from your device's built-in geocoder (Google-backed on most Android phones; Apple's geocoder on iPhone and iPad), not from Folio. AVIF images decode only where the OS provides an AVIF codec (roughly Android 12 and newer; iOS does not currently provide one, so AVIF is Android-only for now). Tag and rating storage differs by platform: on Android, Folio writes them into the file itself (embedded XMP, or a sidecar file for formats that do not support embedding), so they travel with the file and survive a reinstall. On iPhone and iPad, Apple's Photos framework does not let any app rewrite an original in place, so Folio instead keeps tags, ratings, and edits in its own on-device overlay (mirrored into the app's Documents folder so it is included in your device backup) and applies them whenever you convert, export, or share a copy; the original asset in your Photos library is never modified. The optional "installed app access" toggle in Settings → Privacy (off by default) only lets Folio check whether a small number of specific companion apps, such as its sibling app Scrub, are installed, to improve album icons and hand-offs; it is not a general inventory of everything on your device, and it is Android only. iOS provides no equivalent API, so the toggle has no effect there.

2. Data Folio stores on your device

Folio stores its working data (your settings, history, and content) in the app's private storage on your device. This data never leaves your device through Folio. You can clear it at any time: on Android, clear the app's storage in Settings or uninstall the app; on iPhone or iPad, delete the app, which removes its on-device data.

Android's own backup system may include this data in your Google account backup if you have device backup enabled in Android Settings. That backup is controlled by Google and by your device settings; Kuroki Studio cannot access it.

On iPhone and iPad, if you have iCloud Backup or an encrypted device backup enabled, Apple's backup system may include this data. That backup is controlled by Apple and by your device settings; Kuroki Studio cannot access it.

3. Permissions Folio requests and why

Photos and videos (user-selected) (android.permission.READ_MEDIA_VISUAL_USER_SELECTED) · Android only

To display the photos and videos you grant access to.

Photo library (NSPhotoLibraryUsageDescription) · Apple only

Folio shows and organizes the photos and videos in your library, and writes edits, converted copies, and restored items back to it. Nothing is uploaded.

Media location (android.permission.ACCESS_MEDIA_LOCATION) · Android only

To read the geolocation tag stored inside a photo file (for the map view). Location is read from the file only and never collected by Folio. On iPhone and iPad, this is covered by the Photo Library permission above; no separate permission is requested.

Set wallpaper (android.permission.SET_WALLPAPER) · Android only

To set a photo as your device wallpaper from within Folio.

Post notifications (android.permission.POST_NOTIFICATIONS) · Android only

To show progress of long-running operations such as batch export.

Wake lock (android.permission.WAKE_LOCK) · Android only

To keep the screen on during the slideshow and screen-saver modes.

Internet (android.permission.INTERNET) · Android only

Used on demand for three things: downloading OpenStreetMap map tiles when you open the map, resolving place names for geotagged photos through the platform geocoder, and verifying or restoring your Pro purchase (Google Play Billing and RevenueCat). On iPhone and iPad, network access needs no permission but is used the same way. Your photos and videos never leave the device through Folio.

4. Third-party services used in Folio

Folio is a paid app. To process your purchase and restore it on reinstall or a new device, it uses Google Play Billing on Android, Apple In-App Purchase (StoreKit) on iPhone and iPad, and RevenueCat on both. Where an app also has an optional feature that reaches the network (for example fetching live currency rates), the service behind that feature is listed below with the exact purpose it serves and the data it receives. No third-party services beyond those listed here are used.

Google Play Billing

Purpose: Processes the in-app purchase itself. All payment handling is performed by Google.

Data shared: Whatever Google Play collects to process a purchase on your Google account. Kuroki Studio never sees your payment details.

Apple In-App Purchase (StoreKit)

Purpose: Processes the one-time Pro purchase on iPhone and iPad. All payment handling is performed by Apple.

Data shared: Whatever Apple collects to process a purchase on your Apple Account. Kuroki Studio never sees your payment details.

RevenueCat

Purpose: Verifies your purchase and restores it on reinstall or on a new device signed in to the same store.

Data shared: An anonymous app-install identifier, the store purchase token (the Google Play purchase token on Android, or the App Store transaction on iPhone and iPad), your device platform and app version, and country (derived from IP at the time of purchase). No name, email, contacts, or location is sent.

OpenStreetMap tile servers (map view only)

Purpose: When you open the map, Folio downloads raster map tiles from the OpenStreetMap-family tile servers to draw the area you are viewing. No tiles are fetched until you open the map.

Data shared: Only the standard metadata any tile server receives: your IP address and which map tiles (area and zoom level) you request. No photo and no photo location is uploaded, and no account or device identifier is attached. Folio uses keyless raster tiles and ships no Google Maps API key.

Platform geocoder (place-name lookup and map search · Google-backed on Android, Apple-backed on iOS)

Purpose: If you turn on place name lookup in Settings (off by default), Folio asks your device's own geocoding service to turn a geotagged photo's coordinates into a country / state / place name; country names are worked out on-device from a bundled offline map and are never sent anywhere. If you search for a place on the map, the text you type is sent the same way to resolve it to a location.

Data shared: The coordinates or search text are resolved by the device's built-in geocoding service: Android's platform geocoder (Google-backed on most phones, see policies.google.com/privacy) on Android, and Apple's CLGeocoder (see apple.com/legal/privacy) on iPhone and iPad. Folio runs no server of its own for this and attaches no account or Folio identifier; it is not an OpenStreetMap or Kuroki lookup.

5. Children's privacy

Folio is not directed at children under 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your jurisdiction). Kuroki Studio does not knowingly collect any data from children. Because Folio does not collect personal data from anyone, this also applies to children who use the app.

6. Your rights

Because Kuroki Studio does not hold any personal data about you in connection with Folio, there is no personal-data record to access, correct, port, or erase on our end. To remove the app data stored on your device, clear the app's storage in Android Settings, or delete the app on iPhone or iPad. See the account and data deletion page for details.

Under Japan's Act on the Protection of Personal Information (APPI), under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), under the UK GDPR, and under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), you have rights including access, correction, deletion, and (where applicable) the right to lodge a complaint with your data protection authority. 7. Changes to this policy

If Kuroki Studio changes this policy, the new version will be posted at this URL and the effective date at the top will be updated. Material changes (such as introducing a new third-party service) will additionally be noted in the app's "What's new" entry on Google Play and the App Store.
